Characteristics of Camponotus maculatus subnudus
Camponotus maculatus subnudus is a relatively rare Asian species, native to Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines). It is characterised by its light brownish appearance. They are hardy, moderately easy to keep. They like warmth and moderate humidity.
Their nuptial flight, typical of tropical Camponotus species, generally takes place between June and August. It is not a native species in Hungary, so it cannot be captured from the wild in our country.
A C. m. subnudus is a fast-growing species, with a single adult queen reaching several thousand workers. It is a monogynous species, so one queen can be kept in a test tube/formicarium. During their development, cocoon appears. The Queen could live up to 15 years.
Camponotus maculatus subnudus does not hibernate. They can be kept at room temperature in winter (December – February).
They like small insects and worms for food. It is essential that they are fed only sterile food, as insects caught outside may carry pathogens at higher rates, which could lead to the death of the colony. Honey and sugar water are also suitable. Water supplies should always be available for them.
