Characteristics of Camponotus fedtschenkoi
No official Hungarian name is available for Camponotus fedtschenkoi. A species of Carpenter ants, mostly Asian, native to Central Asia and the Middle East (Iran). It is characterised by its brownish-yellowish appearance, which is not typical of Camponotus species. They are hardy, easy to keep. They like warmth and moderate humidity.
Their nuptial flight, typical of Camponotus species, generally takes place in the months from April to June. It is not a native species in Hungary, so it cannot be captured from the wild in our country.
C. fedtschenkoi is a moderately fast-growing species, with a single adult queen reaching 100+ workers. It is a monogynous species, so you can keep one queen in a test tube/formicarium. During their development, cocoon appears. From puppy to adult worker, about. 6-8 weeks are needed. The Queen could live up to 15 years.
Camponotus fedtschenkoi has a mild hibernating lifestyle. Recommended temperature during the hibernation period: 15°C (November – March).
They like small insects and worms for food. It is essential that they are fed only sterile food, as insects caught outside may carry pathogens at higher rates, which could lead to the death of the colony. Honey and sugar water are also suitable. Water supplies should always be available for them.
