Characteristics of Camponotus nicobarensis

No official Hungarian name is available for Camponotus nicobarensis. A species of Carpenter ants, mostly Asian, native to Southeast Asia. It is characterised by its light brownish appearance. A species of moderate difficulty. They like warmth and moderate humidity.

Their nuptial flight generally takes place in April, as is typical of Camponotus species. It is not a native species in Hungary, so it cannot be captured from the wild in our country.

C. nicobarensis is a very fast-growing species, with a single adult queen reaching 10,000+ workers. It is a monogynous species, so you can keep one queen in a test tube/formicarium. However, under certain circumstances, it may be possible to start a multi-queen colony (in nature, a colony often contains several queens, spatially separated from each other). Since even with one queen, it’s a pretty fickle species, imagine this with two or three. Their growth is then “lightning fast”. During their development, cocoon appears.

Camponotus nicobarensis does not hibernate. They can be kept at room temperature in winter (December – February).

They like small insects and worms for food. It is essential that they are fed only sterile food, as insects caught outside may carry pathogens at higher rates, which could lead to the death of the colony. Honey and sugar water are also suitable. Water supplies should always be available for them.

Attention!

As this species is not native to Hungary, it is strictly forbidden to release it into the wild!
It can bite lightly, so it is not recommended to hold it. No liability for any injury, accident or damage caused by this species. The buyer accepts this and buys with this knowledge.
