Characteristics of Messor structor
There is no official Hungarian name for the species Messor structor. It belongs to the harvester ants, the only native seed-collecting species in our country (Hungary). It also occurs in areas of southern Europe. It is characterised by the fact that both the queen and the workers mainly eat seeds along with live insects and worms. They are hardy, easy to keep. They like warmth and moderate humidity. However, they tolerate drought well.
Their nuptial flight generally take place in the months April-May. It is a native species in Hungary, so it can be collected from the wild in our country.
M. structor is a very fast-growing species, with a single adult queen reaching 10,000+ workers. It is polygynous, so you can have several queens in one test tube/formicarium.
